Depression test

Just rented the large bedroom.

The is a pizza delivery driver at Papa John’s - was desperate for a place that would take weekly payments.  Well, I’m pretty intense on getting people in here, so I work with people.  Sure, it’s backfired a few times but mostly it’s all good.

Allegedly another guy is coming - like right now - to look at the other room.

Or, I can hold the room for the dude that wants to move in on Friday.  If I believe him, that is.  I have no frame of reference with any of these people to know if I can believe them or not, the only thing that does anything for me is money at this point.  I already collected the $100 from the newest renter.

Whether I wait or not?  I’ll call him and find out if he still intends on moving in or not.  Having 2 paying renters is bare bones minimum - that’s not eating much of anything but it’s paying my bills.  So I’m at bare bones right now, not exactly the best position to be in, but - I just got done making the second payment on my house.  That’s the 3-month trial they call it.  You have to make all 3 payments on or before the due date or - you’re toast.

I have no reason to believe I won’t be able to make the 3rd payment, but - nothing in life is ever a granted.  I sometimes say it’s a granted, but I have come to the conclusion that any situation with any portion of life can change at any time, inlcuding my ability to make the mortgage payment.  My desperation plan if it came to that? Rent my room out and possibly even Caleb’s since he has his mother’s house he can stay at and freaking live outside I guess.  Yes, I am very motivated to keep this house - however I can do it, I will.

This is a temporary sigh of relief, anyway.  The only long-term renter I have now is the ex-Marine.  He stated he will “probably be here a long time”, but - like the rest of it, I don’t cling to that, I just take it as the potential that he MIGHT be here a long time.  I really have no great issues with him, he makes some pretty gross noises in the bathroom sometimes, but it’s a house full of guys right now, so not that big of a deal.

Long break.  I’ve been outside burying the drip line.  The dogs got into a couple of the areas and knocked the dirt back in - decided to get all dog accessible areas of that trench finished today, which it now is.

Beyond that, the newest tenant has now moved in - and is currently at work.  I have no clue what the life style of this dude is, but he has some interesting friends.  We’ll see where this all goes.

It’s a pretty nice hat this now-ex tenant gave me.  I have been wearing it out there all day - he labelled it: Farmer Ben Hat. lol.

Well, that’s enough, I’m hungry time to make some chicken or maybe a salad or something.

Thursday/Michael

Written on October 29th, 2009
[mood_description] | [music_description]

I wrote about this on the other blog, but sometimes I find it important enough (to me, anyway) to write about something on both of them.

I was sitting there playing some stupid internet game last night - I do that occasionally just because I’m one of those fidget persons and this game was - a fidgeteers release - when Michael simply came walking through the door.

Huge smile on his face, big, heartfelt “Hi Ben!” - quite the surprise and caught me totally off-guard.  I know Michael very well - I should considering he’s lived with me for 5 years - I figured whatever his “other” living arrangement is, it’s “better” than what I am offering and therefore I won’t be seeing him again.  Really, that’s pretty much where I left it in my mind.

I had had these thoughts recently - and wrote them out on my blogs - that I wanted nothing more to do with him since he just totally blew us off and didn’t even offer a “goodbye, I’m leaving and won’t be coming back” type of thing.  Funny what the mind does with logic and what the heart does with emotion - even more interesting when the two collide and an internal war erupts.  I put the war to rest quickly, it just wasn’t in me to speak out what I had thought I might say if he ever showed up again, which I figured he would, but I figured it would be much farther into the future than showing up last night.

I don’t even know if he’s coming back after he leaves for school today, and yes, at least according to him, he’s still going to school.  That was good to hear even if totally unconfirmed - Michael doesn’t necessarily speak the truth when it doesn’t help his case along.

That’s that.  At work, not on the clock, only one thing in the truck routing system and that’s a transfer to our main branch.  Not terribly exciting when you come to work and find - nothing to do concerning deliveries.  It’s near the end of month so they are usually pushing to get whatever is in there - out - for gross sales numbers/GP to be up as high as possible.

And……….it is 43 degrees outside right now!  Forecasted high is 64 degrees.  Amazing.  Utterly amazing.  My electric use was at 4 bucks and change yesterday.  2 months ago it was as high as $14 per day.   Even higher on weekends, actually.  There isn’t any better time for SOME kind of reprieve on the financial devastation front in terms of money going out versus what’s coming in than right now to get this kind of a break.  It’s really the only thing that changes by itself that creates a huge break for me during the winter months that helps my finances drastically.  I’m guessing the total amount spent next month will be less than $150 - down from a high of $420 months for July, August and September was in the $300 range.

Umm, work day approacheth, must be offa here.

How About Just Asking For Directions?

Written on October 28th, 2009
[mood_description] | [music_description]

A lady calls me up earlier to find out the street name for my work.  “Is it road, street, drive, what?”  Street, I say, it’s a street.  She’s trying to find the address on GPS and it isn’t coming up.  This address has been here for at least 30 years.

She goes on for several minutes about how it’s not coming up on GPS.  Well, I offer, I can just GIVE you directions on how to get here.  The thought never crossed her mind to ask for directions and neither was it going to.

It’s pretty simple to find this place, I also respond, not too terribly difficult.

That wasn’t, however, what was going through my mind.  What about a freakin’ STREET MAP?  This woman’s livelihood depends on daily going to different places around the valley giving appraisals on wrecked vehicles.  Considering the history of GPS guiding people onto train tracks and off of the side of cliffs, I find a street map to be much more handi - and a lot less dangerous.

Of course, what person in their right mind is going to just drive onto railroad tracks, or off the side of a mountain, or drive a semi that is taller than the bridge it’s trying to go under, not-with-standing the fact there are huge, bright-yellow signs that give the “Low Clearance Ahead”?

Well, since people have done it, I guess there are not-so-bright bulbs out there.

Rant over.

Tuesday Vouchers

Written on October 27th, 2009
[mood_description] | [music_description]

Well finally. Those vouchers I applied for to get Duke and Prince neutered arrived in the mail. I thought perhaps I had gotten my app in too late and would have to do it again. I have no idea how much they’re worth, I haven’t read all the fine print yet. I have until January to use both vouchers.

It was unbelievably windy in both Casa Grande and Florence today. In Casa Grande, the dust was so bad that visibility was literally no more than 100 feet in most any direction because of all the dust. My eyes, mouth and nose were filled with it. At least 50 mph winds cranking. Trucks being blown all over on the Interstate - not as in accidents - but having trouble keeping in lane. I don’t have much of a problem with that with a flatbed trailer - those vans act like giant sails.

A guy that called on Sunday says he’s coming over tomorrow. To look at the room that is.

I’m very tired as I worked 9 straight hours without a break today and sleep hasn’t exactly been good lately. Last night was a bit better, yes, but certainly nothing like what I want it to be.

So, just another short entry by my standards.

Monday

[mood_description] | [music_description]

As expected, the woman with the kid never called back. It was a very quick and mutual - regardless of the fact non-verbal - communication that this was not going to be a good fit. The thought that that 7th circle of hell had just visited my home was what came to mind with a person like that living here and having a kid that was obviously allowed to do whatever he wanted, whenever, no restrictions, live your life the way you want, baby.

It’s just one of those thing where if she did call back, I would have told after - 25 nanoseconds of thought - I don’t think this would work out too well.

I was finally able to get the title company to send the 4 years worth of interest information on mortgage payments that I was seeking today - via fax.

The insurance company called and now, the appraiser has set up an appointment for tomorrow after work. The car is overheating, the ac doesn’t work and I am not going to just leave it like that, even IF I get heaped with the blame for it. Shelling out more money for insurance is hardly an entertaining thought, but I’ll eat it. I have no idea whether that other driver has attempted to submit a claim against my company, I will find that out tomorrow.

I have no appointments set for the large bedroom. I did have a call today from someone - of whom I returned the call and no answer. I find it interesting that people have phones of which they have no voice messaging set up on it. I know Cricket phones have voice messaging, therefore this must be intentional. Just very curious, really.

I was so tired after work that I went to my bedroom and slept for an hour. I have a very busy day scheduled for tomorrow, I am rather hoping that I get at least a decent amount of sleep tonight. Like, going to bed in 15 minutes. I did not get much done outside today. In fact, I really didn’t do much of anything after work besides the obligatory watering. Because of the fact that temps have come down significantly, I am watering half the plants on the property one day and the other half the next. Basically cutting the water usage for plants in half as well.

The new - if ever so temporary - tenant is a pretty cool - and normal - guy really, he’s here solely because he could get a job here. He was talking with his wife on the phone for a while - also took several pics of Duke via his cam phone and sent them to her.

Short entry, but it’s my bedtime.

G’nite, all!

[mood_description] | [music_description]

That was a weird weekend.

I didn’t get half of what I wanted done - done - cause I started cleaning all the carpet in the house after putting my new carpet cleaning machine together.  Mimi’s dog - the ex-tenant’s dog I’ll put it for context - was pissing everywhere in the house, and even though I cleaned the carpet since she left with that thing, the damage is done.

Damage being my dogs still smelling that other dog’s urine and marking over top of it.  I’ll have to see about getting some stuff that will remove that odor so that the dogs’ natural inclination to do such will be put at rest.

A guy calls me last yesterday afternoon looking for a place to live temporarily.  How temporarily?  He said up to 6 months.  Really, what he wanted was what that last lady wanted, just a place to stay that doesn’t cost $100 per night until he finds his own place, or so I’m guessing.  I took his $100 and said cool - you can pay weekly for as long as you wish to stay.  If you find your own place, no sweat off my back, just let me know when you’re leaving.

Now, I did have that woman with her 9 year old son over yesterday, but I absolutely do not think it would be a good fit.  The kid is your basic spoiled little brat - he was whining and complaining about whatever came to mind the entire time he was there.  The couple never showed up, but they called and said they had “other” things come up and could they see the room this coming week?  Well of course they can!  Meanwhile I am running a new ad every single day.

I only got 5 plants planted yesterday - I wanted to get at least 15 of them in.  JD - my son’s friend - bet me that the Vikings were going to beat the Steelers, which I found laughable at best.  Okay, Favre didn’t look terribly bad out there but they weren’t going to be beating the Steelers at Pittsburgh in their own stadium.  Pretty pathetic game both ways, really.  Steelers won, I got $5 from JD, and then he was all mad at himself for making the bet and losing  - so I offered if he would go out and dig 5 holes for my plants, I would give him his dinero back.  And so it was.

I also got started on the piping system for my drip system - pretty easy stuff but rather tedious and also working in small places while attempting to not trample the plants wasn’t the easiest thing either.  Those 2 guys I paid to come over and dig out the trench - well they were a little less careful about my plants and some of them got covered up with dirt.  No biggie - just thought it a bit unappealing for those guys not to have taken a little more care.

Well, this guy showed up late last night - not that late but by my standards on a worknight it’s late - so I’m kinda tired today.  I pretty much will do whatever I can to keep bringing people in to hand over money to me.  This guy is married with 3 kids, he’s on the “normal” side of things (compared to some of what I have had in there before).  As is the name of the game nowadays, he landed a job here even though his family is staying there, I imagine the guy getting homesick pretty fast.  But, to survive in these economic waters, you are pretty much going to have to be willing to do whatever to keep afloat.

There is nothing in our system for us to do today - I hope that changes this morning and something comes up because the amount of stuff to do around here is dwindling.

Anyway, work day about to start, c’yall later.

The Accident

Written on October 25th, 2009
[mood_description] | [music_description]

As a truck driver, I have learned to expect drivers all around me to do the worst, most dangerous possible move that could happen and try to prepare for any such adventures.

Actually, I learned to “drive for everyone else” when I was a teenager riding a motorcycle and realizing that people don’t necessarily see you on that bike and also that many drivers don’t stop at stop signs or do whatever the law requires in any given situation.

Unfortunately, I don’t always catch everything in time.

Case in point, the car next to me on the freeway. I was in my car, not the semi, on the Superstition 60. The area I was I like to call “Skid Row” because of the numbers of skid marks on the pavement and also the numbers of accidents that happen there. Whoever designed the point where the Superstition meets up with I-10 should - probably not be a highway design engineer. The whole mess there really sucks and I have seen bad accidents there on a near daily basis.

There are 2 ramps at that point of freeway that cause confusion for drivers. The first ramp off on the left side of the freeway is an HOV ramp. It takes you to the HOV lane going westbound on I-10. The second ramp is the ramp that all traffic has to use if they want to go eastbound on I-10. People frequently are cutting across and in front of traffic when they realize they aren’t in the Tucson/eastbound ramp, they’re on the HOV/westbound ramp. Further add to that mix are people trying to get into the “high speed” lane from other lanes so they can use the Tucson ramp exit.

And, of course, the people that want to cheat, pass as many cars as they can and then cut in front of someone - cutting them off - and yes, causing accidents, which is exactly what happened to me. A blue Rendezvous comes up beside me “dives” her car - that’s the way I like to call it because that’s what it looks like - into the space in front of me and then slams on her brakes to keep from hitting the car in front of me. I was totally not expecting that person to try and put that vehicle into that little amount of space - and yes I hit her car.

The damage to her vehicle wasn’t very much, the damage to my car was - I’m guessing a couple thousand dollars worth anyway. Grill and hood are toast, fenders I’m not sure about, freon leaked out of the condensor and I can smell radiator fluid so there is internal damage as well. I didn’t try to open the hood for fear I wouldn’t get it closed again.

We pull over, of course. She was on the phone, I’m asking her if she’s calling the police. She gets a tell-tale look on her face. I’ve seen this look before - no, she didn’t call the police and no, she didn’t plan on it. My take is that she didn’t have insurance and didn’t want to get caught without it. So, I’m standing there left with a decision to make. Shall I call the police or should I just give her my insurance information and leave? It’s not against the law to leave as long as info has been exchanged. This woman was acting very nervous. It was a minor crash as far as accidents go, my air bags didn’t deploy to give an idea of it.

I decided against the police. Even though she cut me off and caused the accident by not leaving me enough space and her slamming on her brakes, there were no witnesses to it. All the cop is going to see is that my car hit her car from the rear, I get the ticket. So, not only do I get hit with higher insurance rates for the repairs to my car, I also get points on my record and - that isn’t really good for a CDL A driver. I’ve been given the shaft on other accidents in the past, I already heard this woman talking, she wasn’t going to tell the truth, I might as well at least get the slide on the ticket and that kind of junk going on my driving record.

My car is still drivable - but I can smell radiator fluid and I don’t want to push it.
If anyone had been hurt in the accident, I would have definitely called the police and eaten the ticket. I haven’t been in an accident since the head-on collision of July, 2005, which was not my fault, either, a man driving a Mustang ran a red light and yes, we met each other, had lunch - my truck ate the Mustang - and had parting words, too. In fact, I wanted to hurt the man - I had 5 kids in that vehicle and this guy’s excuse for running the light? “I wasn’t paying attention”. NO DUHHHHH. He also tried to blame me for the accident but there were several witnesses on that particular occasion.

Such is life. I’ll have a $500 deductible to shell out which will greatly deplete my “emergency fund” - I guess you could call this an emergency and I’m definitely not leaving the car in that condition. I don’t even know if I have rental car coverage on my insurance while the car is in the repair shop. I do have my other car - but it would need a new harmonic balancer and some other minor repair work done to it plus tags and insurance. Tags for that car is $20 per year, lol.

I’ll find all of that out on Monday or Tuesday (2 business days my insurance company tells me to get contacted back) and then decide what to do after that.

As for today, I fully intend on doing everything I wrote about doing today - on yesterday’s blog. This accident isn’t the kind that messes with your head - not for me anyway - where you lose confidence and start doubting yourself while driving in traffic. Not so far, anyway and mostly because I do not consider any portion of this accident to be my fault. That lady committed the unsafe lane change, not me. Again, I can’t PROVE that so it’s pointless. My insurance may attempt to prove such, I dunno, it’s all in their hands at this point.

I’m headed out to Home Depot in a few minutes to buy that little tool that puts the holes in the tubing. Make the hole and then you simly stick an adapter into it, in turn you put a smaller piece of hose onto that adapter, which you then run to wherever you want the emitter. Although it sounds tedious, I’m actually looking forward to it - it’s hardly getting hot outside now, still warm but not hot, and I really do enjoy just being outside and doing stuff like that.

I’m going to stop by Fry’s on the way home and see about getting something to grill for this afternoon. Some steaks would be nice - but I’m sorta limited my expenditures on things right now considering facing $500 deductible for insurance so - probably something more along the lines of chicken unless Fry’s has some meat in their “get rid of it now” section otherwise known as “Manager’s Special” - food that is going to spoil usually within a couple of days. It’s still good, but you have to either freeze it right away or cook it and eat it. I really want to go to Anna’s Linens today as well and get some drapes for my sliding glass door in the kitchen - I want to take the styrofoam down that I used during the summer to control the amount of heat coming in from the sun’s direct rays beating down on that side of the house (and yes, it worked REALLY well). It’s not hot enough really to need that up there now - and I would like to be able to see out that door.

Anna’s doesn’t open until 11 and I am not waiting that long to go to Home Depot - it’s not even 8 am yet.

Well, take a look at some internet news sites, drink some coffee and then get this day rolling.

Tomorrow Was Never Promised And Is Not A Given

Written on October 24th, 2009
[mood_description] | [music_description]

………….but if I’m still here and still cognizant and still able to get around as I am today, and Lord willing of course, then I have a busy day planned.

I will be headed to Home Depot to get a - tool that puts 1/4 inch holes into this tubing with precision and start putting in this drip system. I will be planting the - 21 plants that I acquired today. Okay - maybe not all of them - but I’ll give her a shot. I will probably get most of that 500 feet of pipe in the ground, or definitely, I’ll be giving it a good shot.

BTW, I will continue to give kudos to Home Depot. I cannot believe the change in the attitude towards customers. Did they get a new CEO? Who decided, in that organization, that treating customers like dog - crap was not a good idea and maybe they should try something different? I continue to be amazed at the much greater heighth of customer service that they have attained compared to DECADES worth of S*** in the past. I used to HATE that place - SOLELY for the disdain that was shown from “associates” (associates to who? the devi?) towards customers.

I’m headed there in the morning for a $6 tool and that will be the end of that visit, as my finances aren’t exactly thriving and until I get tenants in here, frugality is the name of the game. Well, I do the frugality thing, mostly, all the time anyway.

However, I did splurge on big cigar on Friday - still waiting to be smoked. I figure tomorrow to work half the day and then sit down in a lawn chair with something on the grill and smoke away. This cigar cost me $7, the Fry’s gift card I received that same day for the scanning error was $5, I figured a grand total of $2 for the cigar and that is the end of that. I would like to grill some fish, to be honest, but that stuff is expensive. I see no pleasure in frying frozen fish that is sold at the store - so I’m not even sure what I’m going to grill out there.

I am going to start stuffing money away for Christmas. It’s just around the corner. Not too much, but enough to celebrate the event. If you don’t know what the event is, I’m sure Googling Christmas will work. A journey into the New Testament found in the Holy Bible would render you well-informed of that event as well. I suggest reading one certain portion of it to gain a good understanding: the entire Bible from beginning to end. Yes, I do believe that would give a good foundation for understanding the season and why it’s celebrated.

Oh, what sparked this entry was a KTAR.com. The news article is named “A great time to plant” - the growers that sold me the plants today said the same thing. I’m not saying they’re wrong, I just wanted to know WHY planting things just before winter is going to approach and possible frost nights is going to be a good time to plant. They claim 2 more months of “good” weather before cold hits. Oh really?

Do you have any memory of when the words “dot com” came to your existence? I didn’t grow up with computers, much less the internet which, really, is a recent thing. Compared to the existence of this world, it is still brand new and experts are already predicting it’s demise, lol. I remember hearing this terminology about “dot com” and hadn’t a clue what they were talking about.

Even after it was explained to me? I still didn’t have a friggin’ clue what they were talking about. I thought some fad, such as designer jeans, which would come and go and therefore, I need not preoccupy myself with attaining any level of expertise about it.

It never went away. I tried to understand what they were referring to - it took a great while to figure out just exactly WHAT was going on as I mostly didn’t care. I’ve never been one for fads. If something is going to stick around a while, then let others be the parrot-pimps to exercise whether that’s going to be a reality or not. I have plenty to do in life to not having myself being used as the proverbial Guinnea Pig for prospector’s delights. I would FAR rather just spend a peaceful afternoon outside, tending to my ever-growing numbers of plants and their care than to wasting my time away to things that are, at very best, temporal.

Dot.Com? See? That’s what came to my mind when I heard it. When I saw the billboards - .Com they had written, I only saw; “Period Com”. In my mind, there was a period and the “word” com written after it. It wasn’t a dot, it was a period and it took years, literally, for me to come to the point where I accepted that this isn’t a fad, it’s going to be the reality of the future.

When I finally came to realize the usefulness of the internet - and that was a LONG time coming - I also was thankful that I had leared the so-called “qwerty” keyboard in my teen years in high school. The internet had no meaningful content to me when it first came into existence. Not only that, but I didn’t own a computer, didn’t have a clue how to operate one, and if you can remember the first computers that came out? I spend HUNDREDS of hours trying to learn how to just USE the damned thing. Umm, excuse the verbage. IN case you don’t remember or weren’t around or didn’t have access, those days were hell trying to figure it out. For me, anyway, as I am not of any generation that grew up with computers as a daily part of life in schools.

Back to planting - I am going to endeavor to plant at least half of those plants tomorrow while still attempting to get that drip system well underway and while still wanting to clean the carpet in my bedroom with my new carpet cleaning machine and also do house cleaning, as well as taking the dogs for a walk and I would love to wash the car, vacuum it out and definitely will have to make a trip to Fry’s.

If tomorrow is around for me, or rather, I’m around for it- then truly, I believe it will be a pleasant day.

The guy showed up - with his dad - to do the trench digging. I have encountered this particular type of person before - I very succinctly informed him that I am only paying for ONE person. He replied that 2 will get it done faster. I replied I don’t care how fast it’s done, I am paying for ONE person. Almost guaranteed this guy is going to try to get me to pay for two people when they get the job done. Don’t care. ONE person - it says it in my ad and I stated it very clearly before they did anything.

I’m getting responses on my room rental ads, I reply to them and then hear nothing back. Strange stuff, this Craigslist room rental junk is. A lady wrote last night saying she is “very interested” in renting both rooms. She’s 34 and has a 9 year old son. Wanna pay for 2 rooms? Be my guest. I wrote her back as well, but, that was early this morning so I don’t know where that may be going. I will be writing yet another ad here shortly.

I did go to the tree sale. Their inventory is almost gone. They had cut the prices of the Sissoo trees to almost half - $3.00 per tree unless you buy 10 or more then it’s $2.50 per tree. I stopped at 8 trees. I couldn’t fit any more in the trunk and I’m not driving all the way out there again. I also got some vines - small pots that went into my back seat - 10 of them at a buck a piece. He had some planted at his house right there and they looked nice. I need them for the back of my house where I have the trellises set up. 3 more firesticks - he threw those in for free. It’s a desert plant that - well when they start showing off their stuff I”ll take pics of them and you’ll see what they are, too hard to try and describe them. Anyway, they were figuring this is the last weekend of the sale - they have everything left sold to some other nursery.

So, those guys are out there digging and I’m going to start putting this carpet cleaning machine together and hope this one actually works.

Well, I’m going to actually go lay down now that I think about it - I didn’t sleep well last night and I am going to take an hour’s nap or so and then get with the rest of this day.
